As the hard water passes through the mineral tank, the hardness minerals are absorbed by a resin bed. The water becomes "soft" and it is sent into the house. When the resin bed needs to be cleaned ( a process called "regeneration"), a brine solution recharges the resin bed and the hardness minerals are discharged into the drain. The valve then draws rinse water into the resin tank to remove any remaining brine solution. The water conditioner is recharged and ready to use again.
